Paceline, April 29

Monterey Bay Racing Team is hosting the Downtown Salinas Criterium on June 22!

Can you help organize?

This is our race and you (yes you!) are expected to participate. You can participate by organizing, set-up and registration, course marshaling, et cetera. We need all racers and club members to pull together for this one. Do you have a spouse or significant other who wants to get more involved in your cycling obsession? It's going to be a lot of work and a lot of fun. Look for an email from D3 in the coming weeks.

Ride/Race Reports

Did any MBRTers jog the Big Sur International Marathon?

SMR - Earlier in the week THE BISON started an innocent conversation about watch straps that went horribly wrong. My provocation unleashed the beast. He set a PR up the A-climb and it took everything I had just to hang on. It's Monday and my legs are still cooked. Jim Ivey also road well and caught on before the descent. The three of us were set to stay away from the chase group but a brief stop/U-turn allowed for the catch prior to exiting Pebble Beach. BISON gave me a fast lead-out on Asilomar but a course-cutting, wheelsucker pipped me for the Siren sprint! Now on to the real race reports.

Wente Races - Leo raced the Road Race 3s; Steve, Evan and Chris White raced the RR 4s on Saturday.

On Sunday, Steven, Chris W. and Evan also raced the Cat 4 Wente Crit, as did THE BISON and I in the Cat 3s. Between the Cat 3 and Cat 4 races, MBRT collected five or six primes. Nice! Some primes were cash, some massages and someone haircuts. (Contact THIS MAN if you want a haircut coupon at a discounted price.) Here's my race report: Mid pack finish after chasing down a solo breakaway because I choose to muck it all up rather than race for second place. Looking back, second place doesn't seem so bad.

Town Center Criterium - Andrew HeineMann raced a few crits up near Folsom. He raced well in the E4 and 35+ 4 fields and says he's closing in on Cat 3 but needs help with lap cards.

Upcoming Rides/Races

TNPR - Meet at the top of CCCX at 6pm for five fast laps on the 4.3mi Fort Ord course. Can MBRT use teamwork to defeat Ben Albracht?!

Wednesday Night Racing at Hellyer Velodrome - I'm itching to get back up to the track. I hope to go this week but it may have to wait until next. If you're new to track racing be sure to complete three novice sessions on Saturday mornings before racing. This video will give you an idea of the atmosphere. Rental bikes are available for $5.

Golden State Race Series with a circuit race on Saturday and crit on Sunday up in Rancho Cordova (East Of Sacramento). These races look fun but there's fun to be had closer to home:

Cat's Hill! Saturday. For virtual recon of this awesome crit and it's 23% grade hill click here. To see what happened to Don Chapin when a goober tossed his bottle to the inside of a turn click here. I'm really excited about this race.

The Panoche Valley Road Race, Hollister this Sunday. Races range in length from to 40mi to 67mi with a fair amount of climbing. Check out the event website for more information. I plan on racing it. Carpool?

The Salinas Crit is also this Sunday. It's not the same as the Downtown Salinas Crit hosted by MBRT. This race is masters and juniors only. Are you over 35 and a powerhouse? Do you prefer flat, open courses? This is the race for you! It's the same course as the UCSC crit -- all left turns. We have some strong 35+ guys and I think MBRT has the firepower to do well in the 35+ 1/2/3 race. There's an MBRT 35+ Cat 4 guy from Soledad who'll crush the 35+ 3/4 field if he keeps track of the lap cards. And that's a big if

If you're not racing this weekend please fly the MBRT flag on the SMR. Another idea is to reroute the Sunday endurance ride to the Salinas Crit.

Cheers,
